"ACCESS TO MEDICINES IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA, WHERE DO WE STAND?

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is one of the most populated regions in the world and experiences a stable population growth rate of over 2,5% for the past ten years (2,6% growth in 2021). This growing population goes together with growing health needs. While lower respiratory tract diseases, HIV/AIDS, and diarrheal diseases remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality, African countries are also experiencing an increasing outbreak of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Indeed, the WHO estimates that NCDs will increase by 27% over the next 10 years on this continent and will be responsible for 28 million additional deaths. This represents an overall increase of 17% over this period. By 2030, mortality from NCDs in Africa is expected to exceed that of communicable, maternal, perinatal and nutritional diseases taken together . The need for medicines is therefore particularly important in this region of the world."
